The Square
Ruben ?stlund has some issues with the contemporary art scene. "In the art world," the Swedish director told Variety, "you bring everything you do into a theory level, where it loses its contact with the outside world in many ways." He should know. His new film, starring Dominic West as a US artist showing off a new installation that's supposed to encourage consideration and humanistic regard, is loosely based on his own experience. ?stlund once debuted an installation where two people enter a square space meant to symbolise a street intersection, and in that space they interact with each other following the courtesy and deference of motorists to pedestrians encouraged by traffic laws. Art should "remind us of those humanistic values," ?stlund says. "I think that this is not very common in the art world."
